Global sports fashion retailer’s move to AI-native product discovery has already lifted search revenue 22% and product listing page click-through 73%

Algolia today shared that JD Sports has deployed Algolia as the governed intelligence layer to build JD Sports’ agentic commerce strategy.

The move takes JD Sports’ product discovery beyond its own storefronts at a moment when a growing share of retail traffic originates with AI assistants rather than search bars. An agent shopping a catalog doesn't care how fast the search box is, it cares whether the data it retrieves is structured, current & true. Algolia makes JD Sports' catalog exactly that, allowing JD Sports to answer conversational, intent-heavy queries – still in milliseconds – with the same catalog and ranking logic that powers its websites.

Since implementing Algolia in 2024, the retailer has increased revenue from search by 22%, lifted search click-through rates by 7.65%, increased product listing page (PLP) click-through rates by 73% and grown PLP revenue by 16%.

From manual rules to a self-tuning system

Founded in 1981, JD Sports has grown into a leading global sports fashion retailer, operating more than 4,800 stores and more than 9 million JD STATUS loyalty programme active accounts globally. As its ecommerce operations and product catalogs expanded, merchandising teams were spending significant time manually tuning results, boosting products and maintaining static rules—a model that could not keep pace with trends, seasonality, and shifting shopper behavior.

In close partnership with Algolia Professional Services, JD Sports moved to a MACH ecommerce architecture and built a scalable search and data foundation designed around its ranking, merchandising, and customer experience requirements.

Kristin Matter, Vice President, Digital Operations at JD Sports, said: “Replacing a highly manual search and merchandising process with an AI-native foundation changed how we operate, just what our results look like. We respond faster to changing shopper behavior and emerging trends,  our merchandisers spend their time on strategy instead of tuning, and the revenue gains follow.”

One of the clearest drivers of change has been Dynamic Re-Ranking (DRR), which uses real-time click and conversion signals to identify trending products and automatically adjust their placement —within the merchandising rules JD Sports' team defines, with every adjustment visible and reversible. DRR alone delivered a 2.2% lift in click-through rate, a 4% lift in add-to-cart rate, and a 4% lift in conversion rate, freeing merchandisers from manual tuning without taking away their control.

Building for agent-led shopping

JD Sports and Algolia have begun using AI to proactively surface emerging search trends, inventory shifts, and merchandising opportunities, and to tailor discovery to individual shopper intent. The same retrieval layer that serves the retailer’s websites now serves its AI agent, giving JD Sports one place to control relevance as shopping moves across channels.

Matter added: “In enterprise software, it’s rare to find a partner that feels like a true extension of your team. When a complex requirement comes up, the Algolia team works side by side with us on a  solution built for our business. That’s why we’re building our agentic commerce strategy on this foundation rather than starting over.”

Stephen Lynch, CEO, Algolia, remarked: "JD Sports understood before most that discovery is a growth engine, not a website feature, and a 22% lift in search revenue is a P&L result, not an IT metric. In a category where demand shifts weekly—winning takes intelligence merchandisers can inspect and control, not a black box they're asked to trust. The next wave of retail growth will go to the companies whose catalogs agents can actually shop—structured, current, and true. JD Sports built that foundation early, and the results are already showing up in revenue."
